Effective Marketing Strategies for School Boards To Initiate

Effective Marketing Strategies for School Boards To Initiate

As the new school year approaches this August, it’s crucial for school boards to develop and implement effective school marketing strategies to enhance their outreach and engagement with the community. Below, I’ve outlined five innovative ideas that school boards can adopt to showcase their benefits and attract more interest and support.

These suggestions are a practical example of how school boards can tailor their marketing efforts to meet their unique needs and goals. By crafting and executing personalized marketing strategies, school boards can ensure they effectively communicate their value and make a positive impact on students, parents, and the broader community.

Branding of The School

To establish a strong and recognizable presence, the school district must be identified as a unified organization. This begins with creating a cohesive visual identity that includes consistent use of colors, logos, and design elements across all platforms. By ensuring that the school district websites share common colors and design themes, each school within the district can maintain its unique identity while still contributing to a collective sense of continuity throughout the system. This cohesive approach helps build a recognizable brand that is easily identifiable to students, parents, and the wider community.

A well-coordinated school marketing strategy is essential to reinforce this unified identity. This strategy should extend beyond the websites and into all communication channels. This includes social media. By maintaining a consistent visual and informational presence across social media pages, the school district can effectively engage with stakeholders and provide them with the need-to-know information. Regular updates, engaging content, and clear messaging can help foster a sense of community while also ensure everyone stays informed about important events, news, and developments within the district.

Moreover, a unified school marketing strategy aids in building trust and credibility with stakeholders. When parents, students, and community members see a consistent and professional image, they are more likely to feel confident in the district’s ability to provide high-quality education and services. This sense of trust is crucial for fostering strong relationships and encouraging active participation and support from the community. The district can enhance its outreach efforts, improve communication, and create a positive and inclusive environment for all.

Early Outreach School Marketing Strategies

Early outreach is needed to maintain and grow enrollment. School marketing strategies to new students and early school starters in pre-school and kindergarteners is important for the long term success of the school.

Your school board could go as far as starting a marketing initiative to spark interest in the district while prospective students were still in diapers. A young student welcome program sends baby bags to new parents in the area.

These gift bags include:

  • A personal welcome from the superintendent.
  • A tote bag and onesie with emblazoned with the phrase “the school district mission for a great start in school to real-life success story in the making.”
  • A coupon for a free baby book from the local library.
  • Early Childhood Education and Community Preschool brochures and course catalogs.

These are to name a few approaches. Afterward, the school district follows up by sending birthday cards to children until their fifth birthday.

SMART School Marketing Strategies With Pandora

(specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound)

A school district can market to local newspapers, magazines, television, and radio stations. However, an often overlooked option is Pandora Radio. Listeners can hear an unexpected advertisement between songs. Public school districts can place advertisements on the Internet radio service to convince parents in the area to send their children to one of the public schools. Pandora might seem like an odd choice for ad placement, but it’s a very sophisticated strategy.

During high enrollment periods, your Public Schools can target the people most likely to switch schools by targeting zip codes in the area—including those in neighboring districts—and telling listeners about the vibrant education available within their classrooms.

Of course, the district relies on plenty of other channels to promote its student programs. It can be advertised in newspapers and on local television, supported by high-quality videos about how it’s working to redesign education.

Stellar Social Media

Your school district can have big dreams and achieve them by maintaining a trailblazing digital outreach centered around the hashtag #SchoolDistrict. Therefore you can create a unified and recognizable online presence, engage with the community, and highlight key events on social media. This will help foster a strong sense of identity and pride within the district and attract prospective students and families. Through consistent and creative use of the hashtag, your school district can stay at the forefront of educational innovation and community engagement.

Building Good Citizens With Recognition

One of the most important school marketing strategies is to celebrate the successes and achievements of students always at:

  • Board meetings
  • Booster groups
  • Parent Groups
  • Other stakeholder service clubs, foundations, civic town, and county government.

School choice by parents or school shopping is real in 2024. Public school boards must act, set a budget, and aggressively share why their school district is a step above.

If your school board needs help redevelop its strategy, then contact me as your school board consultant. Together, we will work to help your school board create a marketing plan that will have long-term benefits and fit the specific needs of the public school district.

Building Effective School Boards in 2024

Building Effective School Boards in 2024

School Bored: Ants, capable, good workers but bored and asleep. Termites are destructive and determined to bore into your school and destroy it.  How to be a highly functional schoolboard, not bored.Keith Kirkpatrick, author of the book Leadersick.

School board members, usually unpaid volunteers, play a major role in public schools. They (trustees) impact the lives of children as the complex organization moves forward from the beginning of recorded history. Some board members won’t change or adjust; sometimes, they must be replaced.

So, get on board. Teamwork accomplishes more than any one individual’s action.

Are you ready to build an effective school board? You’ve come to the right place.

Local School Board Actions

In Indiana and Missouri, the irresponsible actions of local school boards led to the takeover of the state board of education. Why? This happened for several reasons.

  • Poor accountability of the administrative leadership.
  • Poor planning (long and short term)
  • Not paying attention to the school’s audit.
  • Lack of ethical partnership and the inertia of the voters/people.
  • Funding and enrollment trends.
  • Allowing the rainy day fund to dry up.

Remember, it is always about the lack of funding, human resources, and oversight of academic success.

21st Century Qualities of Effective School Board Members

Ensuring you are building an effective school board doesn’t happen overnight. However, as you look to elect school board members, keep these qualities in mind for success.

  1. Have a historical understanding of public education and the community to which they are attached to live.  Public education schools accept ALL students and provide the best education possible for them. High academic expectations, improvement strategies, and emotional support scaffolding must be included, too.
  2. Understand public service.
  3. Be respected in the local community as an advocate for children, educators, and the public good! This includes involvement in the League of Women Voters, Rotary, Kiwanians, Caring Place, and non-profit groups.
  4. Know and or be willing to understand learning education theory. Thus, as additional information is obtained, behavior should change, and learning occurs.
  5. Be connected to ideas of positive change regarding school facilities needed in the 21st Century, such as technology delivery of the local curriculum, enrollment trends, and the lack of highly qualified personnel to fill all required positions.
  6. Understand human resources.
  7. Understands federal public education law and responsibilities to the secretary of state office.
  8. Be able to read, comprehend, and synthesize a lot of information.
  9. They are not on board to drive their own agenda. All organizational change can occur in several forms. Today, schools need to be small enough (in departments, groups, and/or associations’ unions) to change transformational.
  10. Know how to discuss issues and work towards common ground solutions professionally.
  11. Board action is taken as a group, and the school board makes decisions. Once an action is taken, they must wholeheartedly support it!
  12. Be a willing professional to learn.
  13. Know that all states offer school board certifications that can be obtained over the term elected to or appointed.

Ensuring Your School Board Is Effective

Schools should consider hiring a consultant to ensure their school board is effective. As a leadership consultant, I help communities engage in forward steps with school board action, perceptions, and communication with local voters, taxpayers, parents, and all media outlets.

Always remember that school districts reflect the local community positively and negatively. While you can always speak your mind as an individual, partnerships are a must! As a reflection of the community, school board members should publicly always display business casual dress.

The School Board hires personnel, approves the budget, and always, always, always follows state and federal laws and local policies and procedures. When appropriate actions occur, excellent outcomes for students and communities result. In most cases today, a professional public relations person is the spokesperson for the school board’s actions. However, in smaller settings, this position is handled by the School Superintendent.

We can break it down into a few key points.

Why School Boards Matter:

  • School board members significantly impact children’s lives by shaping the educational environment.
  • Ineffective boards can lead to state takeovers, harming students and communities.

Qualities of a Highly Functional School Board:

  • Active and adaptable members: They should be willing to learn, adjust, and work together.
  • Community-minded: Understanding the community’s history and needs is crucial.
  • Advocacy: Board members should be champions for children, educators, and the public good.
  • Knowledge and skills: Understanding educational theory, HR, legal aspects, and financial trends is essential.
  • Open-mindedness: Being receptive to new ideas and collaborating to find common ground is key.
  • Professionalism: Members should be committed to learning, following proper procedures, and presenting a professional image.

Warning Signs of a Struggling Board:

  • Lack of accountability: The administration is not held responsible for performance and finances.
  • Poor planning: Ignoring long-term needs, neglecting audits, and failing to plan for funding and enrollment shifts.
  • Disunity: Individual agendas trump the board’s collective decisions.

By following these guidelines, school boards can become effective advocates for a strong educational system that benefits students and communities.

School & Community Communication Process

If you have read this far, here are some free School and Community communication tips for creating effective school boards. Design a 10-page plan document that connects the school board to the school. The document’s cover page lists:

  • School district name
  • Address
  • Telephone number for the public to contact a person who answers the phone
  • The school logo mascot is centered on the cover page
  • The mission statement is at the bottom of the cover page.

On the second page, list the table of contents of this ten-page document, including the mission statement, goals for graduates, in-house communication, community communication, policies, regulations, and forms (attached to federal law, state law, and local school-adopted procedures).

The third and fourth pages list goals for graduates.

Page five lists your House Communication groups, such as Golden Citizens, Medical Benefits Committee, Calendar Committee, Title 1 Committee, Professional Development Committee, Education Foundation, School Bulletins, Calling Trees, Counselor’s newsletters, and Parent as Teachers newsletter. From here, you will want to brainstorm with your school team to expand the in-house communications groups.

Page six would then list community communications, such as TV and local radio, service clubs, local community clubs/organizations, band and athletic boosters, parents as teacher organizations, ministerial alliances, and youth groups in the community (Scouting America, Boy and Girls Clubs, the Y, etc.)

The last pages of this document should be the school board policies and procedures, such as the public complaints policy, the meeting on participation in public policy, and the PIN Form (Problems-Issue—Need for Policy development form).

Using this outline can get you started on an improved school and community communication process.

Elevate Your Team: Customized Team Building Solutions for Success

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, the success of any organization hinges on the strength and cohesion of its teams. However, building effective teams requires more than just assembling individuals. It demands a strategic and multifaceted approach that addresses emotional, physical, mental, and psychological aspects.

It’s time to unlock the full potential of your team and propel your organization to new heights. Let’s discuss how.

Emotions & Team Building

As part of my team-building consulting services, we will unearth the team’s and individuals’ emotional feelings. By acknowledging these emotions, we can focus on using them as organizational intelligence. Understanding and managing individual and team emotions helps organizational behavior, self-awareness, regulation, motivation, and empathy.

Using this information, we can effectively empower teams to navigate human emotions’ complexities, laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and collaboration.

Our team-building method extends beyond mere awareness to encompass actionable strategies for leveraging emotions as catalysts for positive change. By integrating emotional intelligence into every facet of team dynamics, we facilitate a transformative journey that enhances individual well-being and fosters a culture of trust, resilience, and mutual support. By promoting open communication, our approach equips teams with the tools and insights needed to thrive in today’s landscape.

Service-Lead Team Building

We also include innovative service-learning events. Our team-building approach goes beyond traditional methods by integrating hands-on experiences that foster camaraderie and resilience. Through activities in outdoor settings, such as cleaning up local environments, parks, ditches, or public beaches, teams are challenged physically and empowered to make a tangible difference in their communities.

By engaging in these meaningful endeavors, team members develop a shared sense of purpose and responsibility, strengthening their bonds and instilling a spirit of collaboration that transcends the workplace.

These service-learning events provide a unique opportunity for teams to demonstrate their commitment and dedication — a concept we refer to as “skin-in-the-game.” By actively participating in initiatives to improve the environment and serve the community, team members invest their time, effort, and personal values and beliefs. This deep level of engagement fosters a sense of ownership and pride, fueling teamwork and fostering a culture of accountability and mutual support. Our service-learning approach challenges teams physically and nurtures their collective spirit, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and organizational success.

Knowing The History

Together, we will explore the organization’s historical facts, encompassing its past achievements, current status, and future projections. This history will enhance and gain institutional knowledge and insight into its trajectory.

This understanding enriches the organization’s collective mental reservoir and strengthens its strategic decision-making capabilities. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, teams now have the power of collective intelligence to tackle new challenges together, driving the organization toward sustained success and prosperity.

Celebrating Wins

Lastly, in our team-building exercises, individuals will share life events that may be celebratory, exhilarating, or challenging to understand psychological opportunities for the individual, sub-sets, departments, units, and the whole team.

Individuals learn from each other’s failures and successes. This team building will focus on successes to change the team’s behavior for the organization’s good.

Our Team Building Program

Our team-building program for human beings using the balanced approach consists of four concentrated areas:

  1. Emotional
  2. Physical
  3. Mental
  4. Psychological

These four areas may help unify the team around the organization’s mission and vision. Over time, they produce other opportunities for growth and added quality.

This program is divided into one full-day event or two-hour events over four days. By the end of our team-building program, the team will gain insights into each other, learn more about each other’s unique skill sets, and appreciate, better understand, and realize the participants’ personality uniqueness.

Remember, uniqueness is an organization’s strength when utilized.

The team will gain knowledge and add self-worth to everyone. Challenged teams know their limitations and see pride in accomplishment.

If your organization has other areas to add, the training can be designed to meet your needs; please contact me to get more information on my consulting services. At a pre-event meeting, written objectives will be the driving force in this team-building training session/ program. My experience has been earned, and I am ready to share my stories, failures, processes, theories, and accomplishments to strengthen your team.

Leadership Styles & Best Practices

Leadership Styles & Best Practices

Leadership Styles & Best Practices

Leadership Styles and Best Practices

“These are the times that try men’s souls.” Thomas Paine – December 23, 1776

Who are you following?

Twenty-first-century leadership is needed. A team approach provides today’s trends of leadership styles and best practices. As a consultant, I work with teams of various sizes to offer leadership group training. We don’t need to be hoodwinked or bamboozled by a flim-flam approach.

The ability to learn is the most critical quality nurtured by a leader. It is an often overlooked yet important skill! Truth and justice are still the best American way. You need to harness one hundred percent of your workforce to gain on the competition, deliver quality, and provide confidence to your public.

70% of the workforce, your people, are not engaged *Gallop Polling 2012.

Good leaders show up, lead by example, and bring talent together to solve complex problems for the good of all. When this happens, the outcome is improved customer service, higher sales, and improved quality of products.

Strong leadership across all organizations can bring diverse groups together as needed. The arc of workers still believes that ethical, open leaders should be respected in the 21st century.

My objective-driven consulting agenda can guide, improve, and provide self-reflection for the leadership team. These best practices consulting sessions extend over six months to a full year to achieve desired outcomes.

Re-learn The Leadership Styles

As a leader, knowing and understanding leadership styles and best practices can help you evolve and grow. Each person on your team brings different strengths to your organization. Being able to translate your skills can be crucial to your success.

Authoritarian Leadership

Authoritarian leadership is akin to a captain guiding a ship with a firm hand, where decisions flow from the top down. In this style, the leader holds absolute authority and expects strict adherence to their directives without much room for discussion or feedback from subordinates. While authoritarian leadership can facilitate quick decision-making and clear direction, it may stifle creativity and innovation among team members who feel disempowered.

Transactional Leadership

Transactional leadership operates on a give-and-take basis. The leader sets clear expectations and rewards compliance while addressing problems through corrective action. This style emphasizes the exchange of rewards for performance, fostering a structured environment where tasks and goals are clearly defined. However, the transactional leadership style may lack long-term vision and fail to inspire intrinsic motivation among team members.

Democratic Leadership

Democratic leadership epitomizes the spirit of collaboration, where decision-making is inclusive. Leaders encourage open communication and value the input of their team members, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment. While this style promotes creativity and engagement, it may prolong decision-making processes and cause challenges in situations requiring swift action.

Coaching Leadership

Coaching leadership revolves around mentorship and development, where leaders focus on nurturing the potential of their team members. They provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback to help individuals grow and excel in their roles. This approach fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement, leading to higher levels of employee satisfaction and performance.

Transformational Leadership

Transformational leadership ignites inspiration and drives change by challenging the status quo and articulating a compelling vision for the future. Leaders in this style inspire and motivate their teams to surpass their own expectations and achieve collective goals. Through charisma, vision, and emotional intelligence, they cultivate a sense of purpose and commitment among followers, leading to transformative outcomes and organizational growth.

Laissez-faire Leadership

Laissez-faire leadership adopts a hands-off approach, granting autonomy and decision-making authority to team members. Leaders in this style provide minimal guidance or direction, allowing individuals to take ownership of their work and innovate freely. While it can foster creativity and initiative, it may result in a lack of coordination and accountability, requiring a highly skilled and self-motivated team to succeed.

Leaders Say…

“It’s not about what we deserve, it’s about what we believe.’ – Wonder Woman

Or Captain America who has stated “I can do this all day.”

And the original, Superman’s tagline “Truth, justice, and the American way.”

Followers May Say…

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look up in the air; it’s a bird, it’s a plane, its super LEADER!

Successful leaders today have confidence, charisma, resilience, courage, and humility. And great leaders invest in the employee’s wellbeing, embraces emotional intelligence, use technologies to benefit the employee and organized tasks at hand.

Yes, my friends, future customers: truth and justice are still the American way.

The Communication Cycle

The Communication Cycle

The Communication Cycle

The Communication Cycle
Communication is essential for all organizations, schools, businesses, and non-profits. Honest, correct, and authentic information in and from your organization must be a top priority. Good, solid, and progressive organizations take the time to work the communication cycle to their advantage.

How the communication cycle works

For starters, you make a statement. From there, information is received. After the other person gets the information, then decoding happens. You will need to fill in the gaps as they finish processing the information shared.

Those on the receiving end of the communication likely have biased opinions and, most times, need additional information, facts, and clarifications. This cycle takes time, clear information, adjustments for those on the receiving end, and ensuring your information can be understood.

How is the communication provided?

The communication cycle isn’t just using your voice. Communication is everywhere these days, and we communicate by text, digitally, socially, professionally, and or, at times, using protected networks.

Successful organizations provide onboarding information and documents to address how their clients will receive information about the organization.

Your thoughts must be organized and communicated in a style that those on the receiving end can understand. The message must be clarified and, at times, provided with filters.

Successful people and organizations are effective 85% of the time with solid communication.

This is where bringing in an outside consultant can help your organization.

When should clarifications be shared?

As the need for additional information or questions arises, make sure you do your research. When two or more are involved, there may often be breaks in the communication cycle.

To be more efficient, organize and prepare your answers beforehand. Repeat and rephrase questions as they come to imprint them into your memory and inspire your audience.

Tips for clear communication

  • When using text or audio messaging, be mindful of your emotions and always work toward mutual understanding.
  • Don’t forget to be clear and concise.
  • Provide voice tone
  • Pay attention to your body language and word choice.

Using a consultant to help your communication

Bringing in an external consultant can revolutionize communication within your organization, both internally and externally. Having an outside consultant offers unbiased perspectives and specialized expertise, enabling them to identify communication bottlenecks and inefficiencies that may go unnoticed internally.

By implementing tailored strategies and best practices, they can streamline communication processes, enhancing clarity, coherence, and consistency across all channels.

How To Use Airbnb As A Side Hustle

Airbnb As a Side Hustle
In today’s fast-paced and dynamic landscape, relying solely on a 9-to-5 job is becoming a thing of the past. Having a side hustle allowed us to pay a little more on that bill that was due, reduce our credit card balance, save for a future purchase, or maybe take another day of vacation. However, it wasn’t until I started using Airbnb as a side hustle that I realized the long-term benefits it provides as an income stream.

My Former Side Hustles

I’ve had several side hustling gigs in the past to make money. These side jobs include house painting, buck hay bales, high school sports officiating, security, office furniture installation, and farm chores. Looking back, there was a lot of side work, but it helped my family and kept me busy.

  • adaptability and problem-solving skills

Becoming an Airbnb host isn’t just about short-term gains; it’s a side hustle that brings long-lasting benefits. From financial stability to personal growth, the rewards of Airbnb hosting extend far beyond the immediate experience.
